The Main Thing!

Recently I had the opportunity to speak and share my testimony at my church. The dictionary defines testimony as: “A divine decree attested in the Scriptures, a solemn declaration of a fact, an outward sign.”

It’s my passion to share the message of the cross, of Jesus’ sacrifice of love. Everything about Jesus’ life illustrated selfless giving, He gave it all, let it REIGN ON ME.

Christians are to reflect the love of the Son like the moon reflects the light of the sun. And that is what Christmas is all about, giving, not getting. That’s why we call it Christmas (mass of Christ), it’s a no-brainer.

Even the beloved Charlie Brown and the Peanuts gang know it’s not about getting everything we want and that is what this special Christmas blog is about.

Want?

One of the biggest misunderstandings in the modern church is that God wants to give us everything we want. When I hear these PRETTY LIES, I just want to bamg my head at this SPECTACLE.

Scripture doesn’t teach that God will make a way for us to be rich and famous; it promises that God will provide what we need. LEAD ME TO THE CROSS; that is ALL I NEED, His love is limitless. God loves us too much and is too wise to give us everything we want.

Materialism rules this world, but Christians are called to be DIFFERENT. Yet, many Christians would rather have earthly mansions that won’t last rather than castles in the sky. They really don’t want to LIVE ON forever with our hero, a humble Carpenter born in BETHLEHEM (Matthew 1:18-25).

Jesus taught His disciples to store up treasures in heaven, not earth (Matthew 6:19-21). While the other “Son of David”, King Solomon chose wisdom and knowledge over earthly treasures (1 Kings 3:9, 2 Chronicles 1:10).

Later King Solomon would say wisdom and knowledge are MORE PRECIOUS THAN SILVER (Proverbs 30:15). When we are younger, we tend to choose temporary and materialistic things over what lasts.

It’s ironic that some of my fondest childhood Christmas memories are of the times I didn’t get what I wanted for Christmas. When I was little, I had no idea how many pairs of underwear and socks little boys needed! But my parents did!

A wise parent knows that the needs of their children are more important than their insatiable quest for entertainment or the latest electronic DEVICES. That is agape love. Mature people can TAKE A BROKEN HEART.

For most of us, as we grow older, we learn there’s MORE 2 LIFE than living for ourselves and life doesn’t always end with a FAIRYTALE ENDING. We learn not to let material things drag us down. When you TURN YOUR EYES UPON JESUS, it doesn’t matter if you’re rich or poor in this life, IT IS WELL with you. Maturity and wisdom teach us to DROP SIN and let go of our plans.

PLANS?

For thousands of years the Jewish people expected and waited for a mighty and powerful earthly king to deliver them and take them from the BOTTOM TO THE TOP. They want to reign and rule over the earth because THEY KNOW God. But, God had other plans, much bigger plans, THIS IS cHRISTMAS.

I can imagine the shock of the wisemen when they followed the signs and finally found their new KING on that OH HOLY NIGHT and sang the first NOEL —HOSANNA in the highest, not really!

King Solomon’s father David was wise because he knew God’s plans are better than ours (Psalm 33:11, 40:5). God’s plan was to show the world mercy and bring joy to the world, to all who believe in His Son Jesus (John 3:16).

As Christians our love for the lost should ECHO God’s. Last month Christians around the country broke the internet complaining about Starbucks’ use of a simple little red cup and God’s people decided to LET’EM HAVE IT.

Although, I understand the intent, I don’t understand the actions. Are we more concerned about keeping the “letter” of the law than the “spirit” of it? This Christmas, remember, Jesus is the main thing.

Forget Me Not?

After I posted my last blog, my former writing instructor suggested I write more about my personal struggles in life. She wanted me to share about what my life was like before my accident and explain how God, not my disability, changed me.

She knows a truth we should all learn, our memories (good and bad) are what shape us. Even with my brain injury, I still remember and cherish my early childhood with my father, even the times he disciplined me brings a smile to my face. Memories truly are PRICELESS.

King Solomon explained this phenomenon (Proverbs 22:6). Indeed a child remembers a loving parent’s discipline and guidance. We are wise to remember our parents’ correction. But, sometimes we humans FORGET IT. Or we’re afraid to look in the REARVIEW mirror because of behind us.

Our heavenly Father knew this. This is why He instructed the prophet Moses to write down the events of Israel’s EXODUS and journey to the Promised Land (Exodus 17:14, 24:4-7, 34:27:24)

In His omnipotence, God knew His people would walk with Him for A SEASON and then serve other gods like they were BRAINWASHED. Thus, God's word stands as a reminder for us to remember His faithfulness. It’s a lesson book for us to learn wisdom from the mistakes of our forefathers.

As the SEASONS CHANGE, nations around the world celebrate the Giver of the harvest. In America, we call it Thanksgiving. And we look back on God’s provisions throughout the year.

Of course, liberals have tried to take God out of our culture and history. But, they fail to realize that He is mentioned in the Constitutions of all fifty states. Like our Jewish stepfathers, they have forgotten our heritage. And that is what this special holiday blog will be about. We all have stories to tell, but sometimes we forget them.

FORGET?

During his recent visit to America, Pope Francis commented, “STARS are beautiful, but they eventually fade away.” I found that ironic, since planets can form from the remains of collapsed stars.

The dictionary defines forget as, “To cease or fail to remember, to omit or neglect unintentionally, to fail to think of.” I can remember when I was little hearing my parents say, “One day when you’re older, your memory will fade faster than your body, SOONER OR LATER.”

Ironically, when I had my accident in my early 20s, my short-term memory was severely affected. There are times when I can remember things from my early childhood like it was yesterday and there are days I can barely remember what happened yesterday!

While working on this blog I had what I call a “senior moment.” I woke up on a Thursday morning before going on a weekend roadtrip and I actually thought it was Friday.

If it weren’t for the weatherman on the morning news giving the weather for “Thursday”, I would’ve gone through my day thinking it was Friday. Looking back, it’s pretty funny. I guess I’m only human after all and we all make mistakes.

Aside from my impeded memory, I’ve learned that growing older is part of being alive—both are better than the alternative, that’s a no-brainer! However, I’m thankful for the knowledge and wisdom God has given me from my disability.

Like learning the truth about one of the biggest myths of the twenty-first century, multitasking is king. Neuroscience has proven that it is impossible for humans to multitask; the human brain and nervous system simply aren’t created for it.

When we try to do two things at once, we will fail to give our all to one or the other. The cliché I learned as a child is, “Jack of all trades, master of none.” God created us for one task and He intends for us to FOCUS ON IT.

It’s funny; history has a way of repeating itself. Italian poet George Santayna once noted, “Those who cannot remember the past, are doomed to repeat it.”

After all God did for Israel during the Exodus from Egypt, they kept turning from Him and many still look to a sky full of stars for Savior. In a way they want to multitask. Perhaps, this is why Jesus taught His followers that no one can serve two masters (Matthew 6:24).

Even today, many Christians (me included) and churches can get so caught up doing good works or “churchy things” that we forget what we believe. That’s why a group of early church fathers sculpted the Nicene Creed way back in the first century, around 325. They knew we would forget the core of our faith, because we are human. Often we even forget the promises of God and we miss the SHALOAM of God.

Prophecy?

The subject of prophecy has caused a lot of confusion within the church; it is simply a promise of God of things to come. Because, they are promises of God, they are UNBREAKABLE and come true 100% of the time—not by chance as with many false prophets today.

Biblical prophecy always comes from God, not man, that’s a no-brainer. God is a GOOD, GOOD FATHER and He is ON THE THRONE. Only God foreknew how He would save the world through Jesus.

Which no one was expecting, because they had forgotten all of the prophecies of old about the coming suffering Messiah. The truth is they were trying to serve two masters.

Still, Yaweh foreknew where they were and how He would draw them back to Himself. It’s the same with us, especially for me. God knew that I would walk away from Him and He would have to break me to FIX ME.

And I’m so grateful that He did. Now I know that, like the Jews in the desert, I am never ALONE. Because only a omnipotent and omnipresent God can WATCH OVER ME and FOCUS ON ME in the middle of the storms of life. I serve a strong God and He will forget me not.

No-Brainers!

This fall Chevrolet announced it would release vehicles that help monitor teen drivers’ driving habits. This is in response to increased accidents due to teens distracted by cell phones and other electronic devices. It is gotten out of control.

According to a recent survey 13% of drivers age 18-20 involved in car accidents admitted to texting or talking on their mobile DEVICES at the time of the crash. As technology and knowledge increase, common sense has spiraled downwards and keeps sinking.

Sorry, 21st CENTURY DARLINGS, having no signals won’t BREAK THE WORLD. We’ve all run this RAT RACE for some time. We need another distraction as much as we need a backseat driver.

Eighty-two percent of Americans age 16-17 own cell phones, more than half admit to talking or texting while driving. While I’m sure many of these teens believe they are mature and smart enough to do two things at once, they lack the wisdom that comes with age for most people.

If you are an older millennial or from an older generation, you can remember when most of the stupid things people do today, like not trying to drive while not paying attention was common sense or as the hashtag goes “uncommon sense”.

We have become a society that is so educated and technically advanced that we lack common sense. If you’ve ever spent any time with me personally, you’ve heard me say, “That’s a “no-brainer”.

If I can figure something out while missing 30% of my brain due to the brain damage I sustained in college, then an average person should be able to figure it out. Sometimes it really sucks to BE ME. The brain doesn’t GROW back.

Still, through the pain, wisdom can be gained. And that is what this new series will focus on, no-brainers we should learn as we grow. This series will cover a range of topics from morals to physical health, LOVE and spirituality. But let’s start with wisdom.

Wisdom?

The dictionary defines wisdom as: knowledge that is gained by having experiences in life, the natural ability to understand things that most other people cannot understand, knowledge of what is proper or reasonable, good sense.

I was taught as a young man that wisdom begins with the fear of God and applying lessons learned to your life. This sums up the Jewish book of Shlomoh, the teachings of King Solomon, who is known as the wisest man to ever live. Both Christians and Muslims acknowledge his wisdom. He was the king who had it all and it wasn't enogh.

According to the Bible, Solomon requested wisdom from God, so that Solomon could govern God’s people (2 Chronicles 1:11) Solomon’s wisdom wasn’t for selfish gain.

I don’t believe Solomon’s wisdom just fell into his head instantly or came on like a flashlight. But was more of a continuous journey of gathering tidbits of wisdom through every-day MOMENTS.

I believe this because the book of Proverbs as we know it wasn’t even put together until after Solomon died. I look at it as a daily diary or journal of INSPIRATION and regrets jotted down for others to learn from.

Solomon begins by explaining the importance of gaining wisdom (Proverbs 1:2-19). It is worth more than silver and gold (Proverbs 3:14, 16:16). fools die for the lack of wisdom (Proverbs 10:21)

Solomon wrote three chapters warning about adulterous women (Proverbs 5, 6, 7). It is well documented that Solomon had 700 wives and 300 concubines. I can see where he acquired his expertise and wisdom on women and adultery.

But, HELLO, Ashley Morgan, that’s a no-brainer! I didn’t need to read the book of Proverbs to understand the consequences of adultery or promiscuous women. Whether you have 70% of your brain or 100%, anyone can see that nothing good can come from adultery it, is a barren wasteland.

However, I did learn a lot from Solomon about the right kind of woman to grow in love with in the most famous and final chapter in Proverbs, A Proverbs 31 woman. I’m not talking about a woman who has memorized Scripture, but one who strives to live it.

She is worth more than rubies or GOLD. A wise man knows that charm is deceptive and beauty is fleeting (31:30). A BEAUTIFUL face doesn’t always have a beautiful heart. She is hard-working and has a servants’ heart.

Solomon describes how she takes care of her household and even makes her own bedding and clothes. Until the Industrial Revolution, it was common for housewives to make all of the family clothing.

The arts of sewing and embroidery have become a thing of the past in many households today. I can remember when I was younger, watching my grandmother sow into the late night.

When she died, my mother inherited her sewing machine and after her death, her cousin asked for my grandmother’s machine. But, these are a few of my childhood memories. Some are good and others bad.

Memories?

Fortunately, I can’t remember the accident that changed my life. But, I can remember those first few months after it and going through rehab. It was then that I first learned about muscle memory.

Since the left side of my face was PARALYZED from my brain injury, I had to perform facial exercises every morning to stimulate the muscles in my face, or I CAN’T FEEL MY FACE.

While my brain won’t grow back, muscle memory can be learned to compensate for the lack of feeling. It occurs over time through reputation without conscious effort.

Another known fact about me is I’m a gym rat and workout regularly. It’s not about how much I can FLEX or to FEEL GOOD, I want to grow.

A key factor in muscle growth is changing up workout routines or else THERE’LL COME A DAY muscle memory will form out of habit, which is bad. It makes it hard to stay MOTIVATED.

I see this happening a lot in the church as well, we get used to our Sunday traditions or denominational practices. We meander from one church event to another like mindless zombies looking for the next great fix.

The author of Hebrews reminds us that we should be growing in our faith, not regurgitating spiritual basics like YOU ARE LOVED and God is ALWAYS ENOUGH(Hebrews 5:12-6:2). Those are no-brainers!

Revival?

While I was working on my last blog, I took a ride in the community I live in. ALONG THE WAY, I came across a country revival.

At first I was tempted to stop to listen in, and then I remembered that it was the middle of the summer. I found this odd, because I live in the South, deep in the Bible belt.

Typically, Southerners and Baptists only hold revivals one of two times per year, either in the springtime or in the fall. It’s like clockwork; churches know at the first sign of spring or fall that the HOLY SPIRIT will come DOWN and MOVE in local congregations. Really?

Do they really believe there’s a DISCONNECT between God and the church the rest of the year? Worse yet, the clergy actually plan how these “revivals” will play out. Right down to who will sit in what pew on which night!

To be fair it’s not just the Baptists who think that they can control the Holy Spirit, Who is God. There are many dominations who believe they can flip God on and off like some type of invisible FORCEFIELD.

I’ve heard many church leaders who have the audacity to “invite” the Holy Spirit into their presence. Others arrogantly predict on-the-spot healings or instant blessings.

Clearly we have control issues when we invite the ALMIGHTY God to join us. So we can be closer to God. These teachings are simply dangerous.

We’ve forgotten the fundamental teachings of Christ. One of the greatest PROMISES of the gospel is that God never leaves us, we are always in His presence, whether we FEEL IT or not (Deuteronomy 31:6). We are fully known by Him.

God doesn’t sleep nor slumber (Psalm 121:4); He is the only one Who brings life. Nothing can SEPARATE us from Him, not even death (Romans 8:36–39). And that is what this final blog in this series will be about. How God revives the land, His people and the lost.

REVIVE?

We get our word revival from the medical term “revive”: to restore to consciousness or life, to restore from a depressed or inactive state. Before anything can be revived, it must be dead or inactive.

The prophet Moses described the earth in the beginning as “empty and formless” —except for the spirit of God (Genesis 1:2-3). Then God spoke and the earth listened, creation beamed with life.

Next God formed man and breathed life into them. Then the animals and God breathed His life into them. Later after the flood, God sent a wind over the earth again to restore life to the barren land. After a hundred fifty days the earth was revived.

THE THEORY that revival can be sparked or planned is preposterous. Charles Spurgeon said of revival, “To live again, to receive again a life which has almost expired; to rekindle into a flame the vital spark which was nearly extinguished.” This is why we must die to ourselves when we come to the cross—it is only then that we can receive true life.

The term revival was first used to describe the Great Awakening of the eighteenth century. Both moral and spiritual decay ruled the nation. Religion was dying as the melting pot of the world stewed together different cultures and beliefs; social disorder and public drunkenness ran wild. Everyone wanted to LIVE IT UP.

The Christian principles our forefathers founded the country on had long since died. THE AWAKENING was an act of God, not man—HE DID IT!

It was never planned, coordinated or prayed for; it was a simple overflow of powerful preaching by four New England preachers, most notably church reformer Jonathan Edwards.

True revival is an act of God, for only He gives life. It doesn’t matter how spiritual a person is or how long they’ve been a Christian or how much church talk they can repeat, no one can control God or know His thoughts (Psalm 40:5, Isaiah 55:8).

Jesus once compared the Holy Spirit to the wind while teaching a Pharisee (John 3:8). Jesus’ analogy is both brilliant and simple. Most of Jesus’ followers were Jews and would recognize this imagery that the other “son of David”, Solomon, frequently used (Ecclesiastes 1:6, 5:16, 11:4).

Before Jesus went to the cross, He instructed His disciples to go to Jerusalem and wait for the comforter (Holy Spirit) (Luke 24:49). This would fulfill God’s promise to never leave His people.

Later, when Luke describes the events of Pentecost, THE ROAR of the wind signaled the arrival of the comforter, it was He Whom distributed the gifts (Acts 2:1–4), not man or the church.

The Holy Spirit fell like a PARATROOPER from the sky and nothing can stop Him! He doesn’t just float around from time to time like the sugarplum fairy.

Common sense?

It is both humbling and freeing knowing that we are not in control of anything. There is peace in knowing we can JUST BE HELD by an all-powerful God Who never leaves us.

When the trials of life come, I know He is RIGHT BY MY SIDE, through all of it. Because He is in control, I know I can MAKE IT. When we let go and let God drive, THINGS WILL CHANGE.

Yet, He loves us enough to let us choose between His ways and our desires. He is so crazy in love with us He gives us the choice. Freewill enables us to love what matters most to us.

It makes me UNCOMFORTABLE to admit that I watch the show The Bachelorette. Hey, I’m a hopeless romantic. This year’s final episode revealed truth anyone can see.

When confronted by the man she rejected, she professed that she loved him in the time she was with him. He replied, “Real love is more than just a momentary feeling.”

Real love isn’t just an emotional feeling we feel while were with someone. Its common sense, real love never fades, it only grows stronger.

Even when you’re not together, it doesn’t die. Despite a person’s flaws, love never leaves. Love breathes life into heartache, it can’t be manipulated.

At this point in my life I’ve learned that I can’t control my feelings, I can’t do ALL I WANNA DO. Sometimes love comes when we least expect it, especially when you just LET IT GO and LET DOWN YOUR GUARD.

It used to be common sense that love brings people together, not tear them apart. THESE DAYZ when I look at America, I can’t help but see that we need more love, not just revival.

Fallen?

Like many others reading this blog, I grew up watching the cartoon Fat Albert. During those thirty minutes, I would find SOLACE. I was a chubby and mischievous little boy. I was far from perfect.

Young and naive, yet ever the nerd and geek, mischief befriended me. Fortunately, I had an Army Sargent as a father. He disciplined and corrected me out of his love.

One of my fondest memories as a child was going trout fishing with him in Colorado. Honestly, I never really got into fishing and entertained myself with mischief.

On one particular trip, there was a long swaying bridge that hung low over a pond. I decided to chase some other kids across it and about midway; the bridge flip-flopped dumping myself and other kids into the pond.

I wasn’t trying to WALK ON WATER; I learned first-hand that I didn’t have the SAME POWER as Jesus. The avid fishers were furious, having a bunch of kids flopping around in the pond like fish out of water. Much like fat Albert and the Cosby kids, we didn’t fit in.

I was heartbroken a few months ago when the news outlets flooded the airwaves with the stories of comedian Bill Cosby’s infidelities and criminal activities. I’m afraid his wholesome LEGACY has faded like the cult classic he voiced for half a decade.

His experience and popularity couldn’t save him from his own sinfulness and depravity. And that is what this special SUMMER blog will be about, the depravity of man.

Depravity?

Depravity is, “A corrupt act or practice. The quality or state of being depraved.” The Bible authors are explicit about the deprived state of man (Genesis 6:5, Isaiah 64:6, Jeremiah 17:9, Romans 3:23, 7:18 Ephesians 2:3).

I knew at an early age just how BAD I am, I knew I’m a SINNER. This is why parents have to teach children to behave (like my father). Last month a Florida State football player was caught on camera hitting a woman in a bar.

During the interview with his mother she exclaimed, “I raised my children to never hit a woman and I thought I did a good job teaching them.” What she fails to realize is that ever since sin entered the world after the fall in the garden, everything is tainted by sin.

Although this year, it seems like the whole world has gone out of control! Even the church has become a MAD HAVEN of wickedness.

The threat of I.S.I.S. has reached the homeland. The U. S. Supreme Court has tried to redefine marriage by legalizing same-sex marriage. While many believe that the homosexual lifestyle is part of the evolution of man and the ruling helps love and equality MOVE FORWARD, it actually is more of a regression back to that 1st FREEDOM twisted in the garden. No, it isn’t a NEW WORLD after all; it goes back millions of years.

Science recognizes homosexuality in animals and nature. History dates homosexuality back thousands of years (including the Bible). It’s our sin nature that causes us to crave the ungodly.

Sin makes us feel alive, when actually we are dieing (Genesis 2:17). That’s the DECEPTION of sin. It’s just like the season of summer, Mother Nature is in full bloom and everything seems full of life, when death is just around the corner.

Perhaps this is why King Solomon said everything under the sun is meaningless (Ecclesiastes 1:1-11). I’m not sure about anyone else, but I can FEEL IT deep within my heart before sin ever rears its ugly head as rage, lust, greed or jealousy.

Let’s be real, it’s like the ultimate ROLLERCOASTER and we like to do it. This is why the apostle Paul reminds us, we are all sinners and have fallen short (Romans 3:23).

But, WHEN I FALL I can’t help but think WHAT HAVE I DONE. Like the psalmist, I am so tired of my own sin . . .of JUST BEING ME. I know I’m not the only one who feels this way. However, FEAR NOT, there is some good news. So, LIFT YOUR WEARY HEAD SINNER.

Amazing Grace?

There is nothing we can do to save ourselves; we cannot be GOOD ENOUGH to cover all of our sins. The prophet Isaiah declared our righteous acts as filthy rags (Isaiah 64:6).

Still, God is our biggest cheerleader. He wants to see us finish the race well. If we surrender our lives to Him and let Him take control, we become FLAWLESS and one day we’ll each receive a CROWN. We are saved by grace, not works.

That’s why it’s called amazing grace! There is freedom from sin or freedom to sin. Choose wisely, because we are all fallen.

Freedom?

In the beginning, the prophet Moses tells us that God created man and he was “free” to eat from any tree in the garden except for one (Genesis 2:15–18). But, Adam didn’t listen and Moses tells us that Adam and his wife ate the fruit from the forbidden tree.

Adam freely chose to disobey God like a third of the Angels in heaven, he played a GAME OF THRONES. And sin entered human history because of one bad choice. I’m not sure about anyone else reading this, but I have made mistakes in my past that have wreaked havoc on my life ever since as well.

My poor choices are a result of the freedom given to us. For me, it started when I was a teenager and I walked away from the church to live MY LIFE how I pleased and I made a mess of it. Like Adam, I went looking for love in the wrong places. Although, I loved God.

A recent Barna poll reveals that a third of teenagers have walked away from the church altogether, in spite of their parents’ efforts to raise them in the church. Personally, I’m not surprised. Rebellion has been going on since those tragic events in the garden. God made us free, that is what this special July 4th blog will be about, freedom. For I BELIEVE we need to STOP PLAYING WITH IT!

FREE?

I decided to LOOK UP the word free and was amazed by what I saw. Out of the many definitions given by Webster’s, one caught my attention: “Enjoying personal freedom: not subject to the control or domination of another.”

That definition my attention, because I was always told growing up that sin is fun. ALRIGHT, no one had to tell me—I knew that sin was fun, that’s why we do it. Like with Eve, it’s “appealing” to our eyes.

It’s a travesty, we think we’re free—but we’re really slaves to our sin. I know, because most days it’s hard for me to say NO TO MYSELF. I can’t control my desires, my heart or even my thoughts. What a wretched man I am (Romans 7:24). If something will satisfy me or make me happy, IMA JUST DO IT and run wild.

Praise God, He is in control! The gospel message tells us there is hope and we can be free again. John tells us that it is through Christ, we can be FREE INDEED (John 8:36).

Yes, there is freedom in and through Christ! But, this freedom isn’t a license to do whatever we want and live without the consequences of our choices. Having free will doesn’t mean we will always make the right decision—it’s more likely that we won’t, because we aren’t sovereign or omnipotent. No, God doesn’t control us like some lifeless puppets.

The apostle Paul encouraged the church of Galatia to use their freedom to serve God and others—not themselves or their sinful desires (Galatians 5:13-14).

But, when I look at the world and the stupid choices many make out of free will, I can’t help but SMH. Not much has changed since man left the SANCTURARY of the garden; we are still full of pride and ARROGANCE. We’re still chasing nothing through our bad choices.

CHOICES?

The Bible ends with the Apostle John’s Revelation of those who Jesus has freed from their sins and bad choices (Revelation 1:5-6). The rest of it is a ledger of those who have chosen to follow Jesus, it is these saints who are free at last. Jesus told His disciples to seek God first, not pleasure or even happiness.

This is why it’s important to make wise choices in how we live our lives, now. That’s why I’ve chosen to wait on God’s timing for marriage, because it’s for BETTER OR WORSE. FOREVER WE WILL BE one. No matter what the U.S. Supreme Court or the majority decides—God defines marriage. Just like in the garden, God sets the TERMS AND CONDITIONS.

And unlike us, God doesn’t make mistakes. While working on this blog U.S. Olympic hero Bruce Jenner decided that he wanted to be a woman, after sixty-five years of living as a man. My mentor would say, “Good grief!”

Also, social media and the media markets were overtaking by the story of an NAACP leader who decided to change her race to black. But, what these two have failed to realize is simple as black and white, God is in control!

For the Christians reading this, we need to reevaluate our faith and choose like our forefather Joshua (Joshua 24:15). We can’t wobble back-and-forth between God’s ways and our ways like control freaks. For it is only in God that we can truly have freedom.

Surrender?

Last month after I finished writing my blog, I decided to celebrate by going to a friend’s church’s 201st homecoming.

Actually, I had planned on going for about a month. I look forward to going to the homecomings every year. The church is about an hour drive from my home.

It’s an old one-room church house nestled out in the countryside. It’s a throwback to SIMPLE DAYS when church was a place where Christians gathered to learn—not be entertained (Acts 2:42).

After the service, my friend urged me to stay for the fellowship potluck lunch. While I enjoyed seeing old friends from BACK IN THE DAY, I had other plans for lunch and the afternoon.

So I snuck out the fellowship hall and headed to a pizzeria in the city. After lunch my plans took me for a fourteen mile bike ride along the Savannah River.

The sights, sounds and smells of spring flooded at my senses. Everything was beautiful until I was about a mile from my car; I felt a burning sensation on the inside of my right knee.

When I stopped to examine my leg, I saw a red mark where I felt the pain. That last mile back to my car was the most miserable time I’ve ever had biking. I began to regret my decision not to eat with my friends.

The next morning my leg was swollen from my knee to my ankle. I was forced to go to my doctor. He immediately knew it was a yellow jacket sting. Hitting a yellow jacket at fourteen miles an hour in shorts isn’t a fun thing, trust me.

By doctor’s orders, I couldn’t workout for a few days. For those few days, I sensed God telling me to go slow and let go like He did years ago. I remembered talking to my parents after my accident in college; my mother told me God had great plans for me, because I shouldn’t be alive. Sometimes I wonder. Then I began to REMEMBER the times in the past when I didn’t listen to Him. When I didn't know what He is up to.

Still, THROUGH IT ALL, He was with me and had plans for me (Ephesians 1:11). Like a few years ago when I was crazy about a young woman who I knew wasn’t good for me. I ignored the advice of my mentor and I gave in to my desires.

looking back, I thought I had learned my lesson in college; even the prettiest apples can have worms. I thought I had learned to make better choices; truth is I’m still a control freak and I want what I want.

If left to my selfish ways I’LL KEEP ON chasing my desires, like a dog trying to catch its own tail, going in CIRCLES. Some dreams need to die; it’s the only way we’ll ever completely surrender to our heavenly father. And that is what this special Father’s Day blog will be about, learning to surrender.

Surrender?

The dictionary defines surrender as: to yield to the power, control or possession of another, to give up completely, to give (oneself) up to the power of another.

This is what happens AT THE CROSS; we give up control of our lives to the care of God. Come as you are—but leave a different person, the cross has a way of unmasking the selfish control freaks we are. Because of sin, we are born this way. There is a natural FRICTION between man and God.

Even after we surrender our hearts to Jesus, we often fight Him. But God’s word reminds us that His plans shall prevail (Proverbs 19:21).

While I was working on my first book, I had planned to use interviews and personal stories from specific high-profile people. The harder I worked on these stories, the faster the doors were closed.

Jesus taught His disciples to cast their cares on Him. He also instructed a rich young ruler how to walk with Him (Matthew 19:16-22). The world tells us to GIVE IN to our desires—the cross tells us to give up our desires.

Give in?

My generation learned to slow down and enjoy the journey, we learned to BREATHE IN, BREATHE OUT and wait for love. But, today many people are trapped in their own selfish worlds. Scripture says we are slaves to sin (John 8:34). Sometimes the hardest thing in life is simply letting go, even for Christians.

At one point in His earthly ministry, Jesus’ closest disciples complained about what they’d given up to follow Him (Luke 18:27-30). And He promised God would make the impossible, possible (27). The apostle Paul declared that the HOLY SPIRIT enables us to wait on God (Galatians 5:5)

I can bear witness to this, not long after my accident, God told me to not kiss a woman passionately until marriage. For a hot-blooded man in college, I thought that was impossible. But, I freely chose to obey, I WILL TRUST Him.

At first I didn’t understand why God was telling me to wait until marriage for a simple kiss. But this I know, I can’t control myself physically. I am embarrassingly weak in this area. It’s too easy for me to go from kissing to touching, to the bedroom.

But, now my desires ECHO those of God’s, I can’t help but think how amazing it will be to kiss the woman of my dreams and lady of my heart for the first time on our wedding day. Because, then we can surrender.

Control Freax?

After I finished editing my book, I decided to let a friend who was in seminary, read my book and give me an educated opinion. I expected some heat over my stance against “dream” theology. This false teaching leads people to believe WHATEVER desire is in their heart, God will give it to them.

What caught me by surprise was, my friend had no problem with my stance. But, what he was concerned about caught me off guard and I was left SPEECHLESS and NUMB. I had never heard what my friend shared with me.

After working on my first book for nearly four years, I wasn’t prepared for what I learned. None of my research, doctrinal studies or personal beliefs confirmed what my friend told me—50% of Bible-believing, Christ followers don’t believe in free will.

I decided to seek the advice and opinions from other Christians whom I respect. Sure enough the results were about 50/50. All of a sudden the Christian worldview became unfamiliar to me and I slipped into a depression.

Then, I did what I should’ve done first; I spent time in prayer and meditating on God’s word. I decided to be still and listen to what God had to say. After all, He is the One Who is really in control, no matter how much we believe we have power—we are helpless without Him. Left to our own ways, we are just control freaks and that is what we’ll explore in this new series, our CONTROL ISSUES.

Control?

My original plan for this series was to write about how we are to surrender to God daily in our lives. My hope was that this series would one day become a book of daily devotionals to help others see the importance of spending time with God, in God’s word and learning how to walk with Him. My hope was to turn the LIGHTS ON for those lost and living in the darkness.

Then while biking through the countryside one weekend, God began to remind me through nature that He is in control of everything, He is SOVEREIGN (Genesis 18:14, Psalm 102:25, Jeremiah 32:17). He is on the throne and will be until the end of time.

That still small voice reminded me that God is still HERE WITH US, just like He was in the beginning, when the Maker walked in THE GARDEN with the first Adam. Whom He created in His own image and gave freedom to explore the creation and to decide. We are not mindless robots, per the image of God, we can decide for ourselves. Love is not forced, it’s chosen.

Unfortunately, the first Adam used his freedom selfishly and disobeyed God. Like us, he wanted to be somebody. The comedian Flip Wilson proclaimed, “The devil made me do it.” Hogwash! It is impossible to have NO CHOICE. We can decide to build on the solid rock or SAND CASTLES. Satan doesn’t control us.

The devil doesn’t have that much control, he isn’t sovereign. God’s creation willingly chose to disobey God. The depravity of man, or sin, is the direct result of that decision—not the cause. THE BIRTH of sin is the result of a bad decision in PARADISE and everything went berserk. This led God to regret making His prize masterpiece (Genesis 6:6).

Thus, God has been trying to fix things ever since, He’s not getting over you. First, He tried through Noah and the great flood, then through the prophets. For centuries the wickedness of man would rule and God would correct him through the prophets.

No, the prophets weren’t known for telling the people what they wanted to hear. The prophets were God’s way of lovingly nudging His people back to His plan, not theirs. About 800 years after the prophet Moses penned Genesis, the prophet Zephaniah blasted the nation of Israel for their corrupt and unrepentant decisions (Zephaniah 3:1-20).

Zephaniah talks about good things like: humility, justice and mercy. God again explains His plans to fix what was BROKEN in the garden.

The first Adam chose the tree of knowledge of good and evil, out of his love for himself. The second Adam chose the cross, out of His love for others.

Jesus explained what was once impossible, will be possible through God (Luke 18:27). I’m no great theologian, but I’m sure that was God’s plan from the beginning. I don’t think He planned for sin or evil—but love and good. He had a plan to help us escape the penalty of sin, death. That plan was Jesus and that’s why like millions, I have chosen, give me Jesus.

Plans?

Before I began writing this blog, I was planning on going for another half-century bike ride for more inspiration. I woke up the morning of my ride and a cold front had moved in causing severe weather.

I never lost my temper or questioned God. I knew there was a reason He didn’t want me riding that day. So I spent most of that weekend in my home office studying and writing.

There was an odd sense of peace in my heart as I sat in the silence and watched the rain pound against my window. I wondered why man hasn’t learned how to control the weather, yet.

Again, I turned to Scripture and I concur with King Solomon, man’s plans fail, but the Lord’s prevail. (Proverbs 16:1, 19:21). My will is to do God’s will. I am called to surrender to Him Who knows best.

Take for instance, my desire to move back to Colorado. It’s been a burning desire in my heart for over a half a decade. The moment I set foot atop Pikes Peak and looked out over four states I wanted to GIVE IN to my desire and take a LEAP OF FAITH, to move back there—it was the SIN IN ME. The sky was so blue, I felt like I could touch the sky.

It’s no wonder Katherine Bates was inspired to write America the Beautiful there. But I knew in my heart God was telling me to wait. Although I decided to die to myself, I knew God would revive me. Control is strongest when it is surrendered. However, when I look at the bride of Christ, I can’t help but think, SHE’S A FREAK, we’re control freax.

The Twisted Gospels: Justice?

Most people who know me, know I’m a hopeless romantic and one of my favorite movies is the French war film A Very Long Engagement. It’s a story of two women who’ve lost their lovers to the travesty of war, World War I.

How they each handle their loss is LIGHT YEARS APART. The main character Mathilde hopes and dreams of being reunited with her missing fiance'. She spends years searching for him.

Her journey crosses paths with her counterpart, Tina Lombardi, whose lover’s death was orchestrated by government officials. Tina chose to spend her life pursuing the corrupt officials and making them pay for their crimes.

After murdering the last official, Tina is sentenced to be executed in prison, where Mathilde finds her and returns a gift from Tina’s deceased lover, an old timepiece. Inside the timepiece, Tina discovers a note from her man, “Vengeance is pointless. Try to be happy and don’t ruin your life for me.” How tragic!

In her passion, Tina lost sight of what was good and just. She put justice before love. This is exactly what happened two thousand years ago on a hill called CALVARY. The Pharisees and the Jewish people were so blinded by their pride and anger they lost sight of what it meant to be the PEOPLE OF GOD; they chose their own form of justice and missed the SCHWEET VICTORY Jesus won on the cross, He is faithful. And that is what this final blog of this series is, an Easter blog about the twisted gospel of justice.

Justice or Agendas?

The dictionary defines justice as, “The process or result of using laws to fairly judge and punish crimes and criminals.” And there lies the problem. The Bible is clear, there is only ONE Who defines what is right and wrong, and none of us are Him (Job 36:6, Luke 18:7, Acts 17:31).

However, if you’ve seen the news or social Media over the last year, the Maker has been overruled by the creation. Last year, both information outlets brought out the worst of mankind. Everyone was ranting about or calling for justice about something. There’s a lot more than you think going on here. Being right in our own eyes isn’t the most important thing.

What they failed to realize is justice isn’t what they wanted; we have become an agenda-saturated society. Agendas can become a twisted form of justice if left unchecked. The dictionary defines agenda as, “A plan or goal that guides someone’s behavior and that is often secret.” Whether you lean to the left or right, you want something.

We are willing to fight for what we desire the most. The truth is, everyone has an agenda. Last year it seemed like everyone made theirs known. The homosexual agenda gained momentum as states began legalizing gay marriages left and right. With the implementation of Obamacare, the pro-choice movement took center stage.

Soon after the death of Eric Garner, the anti-racism agenda flooded the airwaves. And again a month later, after Michael Brown was wrongfully shot; outcries about racism once more took over social media, WELCOME TO AMERICA.

On the worldwide stage, the religious agenda struck fear in the hearts of the world as an Al-Qaeda shoot-off, Isis, shocked the world with its Islamic extremist propaganda.

The religious agenda is one of the oldest and most passionate or dangerous agendas known to man. Most believe it is to their benefit to aid God in the fight for justice and are on fire for Him—yet, have no FEAR OF GOD themselves. Our higher learning doesn’t help us know the difference between what is right and what is wrong.

Jerry Jenkins continues in his book I Saul, “I (Paul) hounded Nathaniel daily until I wore him down, persuading him to personally seek a private audience for me with the high priest, Caiaphas. When it was granted, I pleaded with Caiaphas to extend to me the authority of the Sanhedrin itself. ‘As long as these men proclaim a dead man the Messiah, I won’t rest until they are brought to justice. What deliverer would be put to death in such a vile manner? You did right by having them beaten for disobedience, but it didn’t stop them. Their blasphemy has escalated.”

Like Saul and the Jewish nation before him, Christians, THE SAINTS have forgotten the nature of God. Yes, He is just and righteous, but He is a merciful God (2 Samuel 24:14, Psalms 86:5, 145:9, Luke 6:36, Ephesians 2:4, Hebrews 4:16). At the heart of the gospel message, God’s mercy is the center of it all.

Mercy?

In my opinion, God’s mercy is the best part of the gospel message. According to Webster’s dictionary mercy is, “The discretionary power of a judge to pardon someone or to mitigate punishment, especially to send to prison rather than invoke the death penalty.”

However, my favorite definition is a colloquial quote, “Justice is getting what you deserve, whereas mercy is not getting what you deserve.” JUSTICE AND MERCY are polar opposites. It was one of King David’s greatest pleas (Psalm 51:1-5). The gospel message is, through Jesus, God’s mercy saves us from ourselves.

The great British preacher Charles Spurgeon once noted, “God's mercy is so great that you may sooner drain the sea of its water, or deprive the sun of its light, or make space too narrow, than diminish the great mercy of God.”

Like most people, I LIKE TO WIN and believe that in Christ we are more than CONQUERORS. But, our hope in Jesus isn’t that we can HAVE EVERYTHING we want or justice, we are broken together. Our hope is that through Jesus we are justified (Romans 5:1, Colossians 1:21-23).

What Jesus did for love on the cross is how our Father won the war against Satan and sin. His act of MERCY set all who believe free from eternal hell and for that I’m eternally grateful, for I too am a sinner saved by GRACE and that’s why I willingly choose to follow Jesus. He died and rose so we could live.

Recently, I confessed to a brother of the faith about how ashamed I am of the road rage I show when I’m biking and drivers either blow their horns or “buzz” me with their cars. I know I should try and BRUSH ‘EM OFF. I wish I had the power to shake it off, but I don’t. It comes down to to I’M A SINNER in need of a SAVIOR. That’s why, Jesus, I TRUST IN YOU to fight the good fight. No, I’m not bulletproof to sin and my mouth goes BOOM SHAKA LAKA. I’m not fooling anyone, even though today is April Fools’ Day.

I could try and make excuses to justify my behavior, but there’s no excuse to justify how I react to the actions of others. My first reaction isn’t very Christ-like; it isn’t one of mercy or grace. It’s not even a polite plea for justice.

The Twisted Gospels:Keep Fighting

Each week I join millions of Americans by watching countless hopefuls fight for their dreams on American Idol. Dreaming has become a multi-trillion dollar EMPIRE that has reshaped television programming over the last decade.

The networks know the reality of everyone having big dreams. Isn’t that why millions of us tune in each week, because we want to chase our dreams too? Everyone wants their four or five seconds of fame, you're not alone. But, the harsh truth is, not everyone gets to live the dream—and that’s where the drama comes from.

Sometimes, I CRY along with those who don’t get what they had hoped for. Or I cry because I’m so happy that someone who is flat broke has a chance to provide for themselves and their families.

But, to be honest, what breaks my heart the most. Are those who BLOW MY MIND by thinking because they believe in Jesus, HE SAY, SHE SAY they will win the competition and receive EVERYTHING—they—have worked hard for. Seems like a lot of hard work to me.

At this point in my life, my youth is fading, my dreams are dead—but I still have hope! God is RIGHT BY MY SIDE. No T.V. show can give you this hope, DON’T WASTE YOUR LIFE chasing dreams.

Although, God’s power is LIMITLESS (Job 42:2; Psalm 36:6), ours isn’t. I can’t fly like a bird or walk on water, regardless of how much I believe or dream. Popular Christianity isn’t biblical Christianity—it’s materialism. God doesn’t promise to pour down material blessings like rain. There’s MORE 2 LIFE than worthless stuff.

King Solomon warned us about chasing after pleasures and riches (Proverbs 23:5; Ecclesiastes 1:3, 2:11, 18). That is what this St. Patrick’s Day blog will be about, the twisted gospel of believing and receiving.

KEEP FIGHTING?

Legend has it; St. Patrick was taken from his home in Britain when he was only sixteen. He spent six years in Ireland living as a slave, until one night when God spoke to him in a vision. God told him to flee to the coast of Ireland. So he walked Two hundred miles to the coast where he was able to board a ship and return to Britain.

After returning to Britain and being reunited with his family, Saint Patrick had another vision. This time, it wasn’t exactly what he had hoped for. God told him to return to Ireland and spread the gospel. God wanted Saint Patrick to love on the people who kidnapped him and then lead them to Jesus—crazy!

There is a difference between dreams and visions; dreams make us FEEL GOOD, visions are MORE THAN A DREAM and help guide us in THE PLAN God has for us. Not every dream is from God and we just may not like them.

Let’s be honest, most people would rather fight God to achieve their selfish desires and LIFESTYLE. Many people treat God like some kind of genie in a bottle or a magical machine that we input our dreams and wait expectantly, “claiming” it in the name of Jesus. Come on give me that, so You can be glorified, God.

I’ve never seen anything in the Bible to justify this selfish mentality; in fact, I’ve seen quite the opposite. The Bible is full of countless stories of people willingly giving up their wants and desires to follow Jesus, even to the death.

In the “faith” chapter of Hebrews, the author gives a detailed listing of those who did not recieve what was promised and they were commended for their faith (Hebrews 11:24–38). Jesus Himself willingly refused the pleasures of this world when He was tempted in the desert. Jesus taught His followers to D.I.E. to themselves daily (Matthew 16:24).

Jerry Jenkins continues in his book I Saul, “However, the death of Stephen did not have its intended effect on the people of the Way. Continuing to insist that Jesus had resurrected from the dead and cannot be termed a martyr, they began calling Stephen the first martyr to the cause of Christ. Rather than cowering in fear of the same fate for themselves, some even expressed envy for the fact that Stephen had been privileged—imagine!—to have been persecuted this way for the sake of Jesus.”

It’s quite different for many Christians in the modern church; we’ve become daydreamers sleepwalking through life, consumed by our dreams. Instead of visionaries letting God guide us like a COMPASS. Compasses work because they always point north; it’s called “true” north because it can always be trusted. Just like God. We need to wake up.

Just?

In a recent episode of Grey’s Anatomy, April Kepner, a Christian doctor had to face a decision to abort her child with a defective gene. Her heart–felt plea with her husband broke my heart, because it hit home for me as well:

“This isn’t fair, it’s not just. I have spent my whole life believing in a God Who is just. He gave me a calling and I followed it. I save lives every day and I feel like I’m finally becoming who He wants me to be and then this…to be handed this—all of those years trusting and believeing and praying.”

I’m so glad that God chose to SAVE ME from my selfish desires and dreams instead of giving them to me. Many false teachers present the gospel like it’s a Powerball lottery where God multiplies every dream we have. But this simply isn’t true, the good news of the gospel has nothing to do with our dreams, it’s all about JESUS, He will HOLD YOUR HAND in the hard times you’re left counting stars (Isaiah 41:10).

Pastor Sam storms said it best, “The purpose of existence is the pursuit of enjoyment … in God! Our desires, affections, pursuits, all that we say and do, all that we love or hate, are to be measured by this single criterion and subordinated to this one end: happiness in God.” God is just and HE KNOWS what He is doing (Ecclesiastes 3:17; 2 Thessalonians 1:6).

Since I’ve stopped fighting God and learned to surrender, He has showed me so much more about myself, and in recent years given me NEW DREAMS. I’ve learned to LET IT GO and trust God with it. Even if I’m not happy where I am right now, I still have peace.

Jesus taught His disciples to cast their burdens on Him (Matthew 11:28). There’s no need to keep on fighting; we can trust a just God to keep fighting.

The Twisted Gospels:Vibin'

Last year after I finished rewriting my book, Christian author Jerry Jenkins offered to critique it for my final class with the Guild. I was scared, Mr. Jenkins is known for being a very thorough critiquer. Hence, why he named his critiques “thick-skinned critique.”

I’ve known for years about Mr. Jenkins’ direct, no holds barred approach to equipping future writers. For decades Jerry has tried to help writers who can not speak for themselves. Jerry’s approach is a tough LOVE. Not the temporary, SUGAR–coated worldly love that many prefer.

Even my instructor at the time cautioned me about Jerry’s remarks. But, I jumped at the chance to learn from him.

It’s better to know the harsh truth about something, than to believe a lie that only makes us feel good about ourselves (Proverbs 27:6). I’m a firm believer in the old adage, “a half-truth a whole lie.” The most loving thing we can do is tell someone the WHOLE TRUTH, even if they don’t like it.

That is what this special Valentine's blog will be about, the twisted gospel of encouragement.

ENCOURAGEMENT?

Encouragement is mentioned in the New Testament more than 100 times. Thus, it’s an important teaching in the Christian faith. But somewhere, this teaching has gotten twisted and one-sided.

The Greek word for encouragement in the New Testament is Parakaleo, it means more than just encouragement. It also means comfort, strengthen, teach or admonish (rebuke).

It depends on the context it’s used in. When I was involved in men’s ministry, one of the foundational scriptures we taught was Proverbs 27:17, this imagery is meaningful.

The iron sharpening process isn’t a cakewalk. It involves heat and friction. Sometimes sparks will FLY. I’m a firm believer in the teachings of accountability and rebuking.

I thank God for the community of faith and the godly men in my life who guide and mentor me. I know they love and care for me, even when we don’t see eye to eye.

Scripture is clear, we SHOW LOVE by being honest with each other, which can be comforting or correcting (Matthew 18:15; Luke 17:3; Galatians 6:1; 1 Thessalonians 5:11; John 3:14–19)

There are times when a BROTHER needs correction and there are times when he simply needs SHOULDERS to cry on. Christianity can be a lonely road of faith.

Jerry Jenkins continues in his book I Saul, “I am so weary of darkness,’ Paul told Luke. ‘Your visits are a great encouragement, but nothing is so disheartening as being unable to see.”

Yes we all need encouragement in one form or another. But, leaders please stop blowing bubbles like bubblegum. Don’t break open the word of God and cherry-pick the parts people want to hear.

Here I go, this feel good never get your feelings hurt belief isn’t biblical. I hate to see your heart break, but this fluff and stuff isn’t the good news or HEARTBEAT of the gospel. Biblical truth has been replaced by social tolerance, and it is sad.

The founder of World Vision Bob Pierce wisely said, “Let my heart be broken by the things that break the heart of God.” The world will never know the love of God until we learn how to share the truth of the gospel message. That is how to save a life.

HOW DID WE GET HERE? It’s BEYOND ME how we’ve become feel-good love addicts and party people. Thinking positive doesn’t make life a bed of roses. Even when things aren’t positive, THIS IS LIVING.

POSITIVITY?

Before Jerry and I had our talk about my book, I shared with him about my accident and how the doctors, family and friends chose to TELL ME the truth about how bad my health and accident was.

They could’ve said something positive to raise me up and make me feel good. They could’ve tried to SPEAK LIFE into me—which is another new age and twisted teaching.

That is why I’d rather be told the harsh truth than a flat out lie. Jesus promised that it’s the truth that really sets us free (John 8:32, 36). But honestly, I didn’t really like the truth. I became depressed and miserable.

At first, I wanted to fight God. I wanted to play the guitar again. I wanted to tear up the dance floor again. Then I prayed for God to help me to be who He wanted me to be—I prayed for GOD’S WILL.

Then I realized, LOVE IS HERE. As God’s messangers we share about our trials and tribulations and how God brought us through difficulties, to encourage others (1 John 4:12–19).

How God takes all of the BAD things in life and turns them into GOOD STUFF (Romans 8:28), that should leave us vibin'.

Reincarnated?

One of the top gifts this past Christmas was the Fitbit. It was so popular that many stores and websites sold out. It’s no surprise, the health and fitness industry has become a $20 billion a year PHENOMENON—ranging from gym memberships/home equipment, health nutrition to sportswear and now technology.

I’m sure that with the BRAND NEW year the Fitbit will only become more popular. Since this is the time of year everyone wants to get in better shape and feel good about themselves. Or perhaps make some other change in their lives.

This is why we make New Year’s resolutions. Pastor Greg Laurie notes, “Medical science seeks to add years to your life, but Christ wants to add life to your years.”

We want to leave the old behind and look forward to new possibilities. Weight loss has topped the list for resolutions for decades. Do you want a better you in 2015? Or are you hoping to find yourself? Honestly, I’m hoping THIS IS MY YEAR for a lot of changes.

When Oprah Winfrey was interviewed by Barbara Walters, she confessed that. “The weight thing” was the one thing she wished she could have succeeded at. Having money won’t help you restart your life, reinvent yourself or have REJUVENATED youthful looks or help you live forever.

Despite what countless cults and new age religions say, there is no fountain of youth. And that is what my New Year’s blog will be about, the twisted gospel of “re” incarnation.

The old?

For centuries many different religions have taught beliefs about the afterlife or REGENERATION. The Greeks thought of it as a step in the process of salvation.

Recently this new age term has crept into many Christian churches as a means of describing spiritual rebirth through Christ. But, it fails to communicate the biblical concept of being BORN AGAIN, the Christian belief that the old has passed away and God is making me new (Isaiah 43:18; 2 Corinthians 5:17).

Even Nicodemus asked, how can this be (John 3:1–21)? Christianity is a lot like a powerful volcano (1 John 3:8). Theologian Timothy Keller recently stated, “Christianity doesn't give you what you want, it is more like an explosion that destroys everything you had to make way for something new.”

The good news of the gospel is that through Christ, the old is gone (lifestyles, mistakes, and regrets) and the dead live again (Colossians 2:13-14). WHO I AM now is not who I was—I’M GONE. Hollywood has taken this doctrine and twisted it into sick entertainment.

The zombie craze, the myth of Dracula and even the runaway WALKING DEAD franchise are all spins on the new life through Christ. Remember LAZARUS? It’s clear the idea of new life has confused many and we are not all on the SAME TEAM.

Over two thousand years ago the debate over the resurrection of the dead divided the Pharisees and Sadducees. Those who denied it would have no part in the resurrection. But they believed that only God can judge. Remember the Pharisee NICODEMUS or more importantly the apostle Paul?

Jerry Jenkins writes in his book I Saul, “It took a miracle to make the old things pass away and for all things to become new. There could have been no talking me (Paul) into this. I went from a life of service to God characterized by persecuting people who believed Jesus was the Messiah, to being convinced by Christ Himself that He was indeed the Son of God. I traveled to Damascus as one person and arrived there as someone else entirely.”

INCARNATE?

Out of all the twisted teachings about new life, none are STRANGER than reincarnation. Incarnate means to be made in a human body. Not some animal or flower or even an angel.

This is why Scripture says that Jesus is God incarnate; He is GOD IN THE FLESH. He came to earth as a man, was crucified, rose from the grave and now sits on the throne. All because He loves us with a FURIOUS LOVE and that should give us all a good feeling.

The Apostle Paul told the church in Corinth that Jesus was the first of many to be raised from the dead and when He returns, those who belong to Him, WE ALL RISE UP and live with Him until the end of time (John 6:40; 1 Corinthians 15:2). In Christ we become THE IMMORTALS. Why do we need to be reincarnated?
